"Levi and Fanny drove from Columbus Ohio to Lowden Cedar City Iowa, in a sleigh with two fine horses during the winter of 1858 crossing the Mississippi river on the ice. They lived in Cedar City until April 1869, when they drove to Jefferson Green County, Iowa in a covered wagon. Their six year old son Ben drove the milk cows and rode horse back for the three week journey. They settled on a raw piece of Prairie land with not a tree in sight. They were used to the heavily treed land with fine timber and fruit trees. They dug a hole to hide from the dreadful, storms of the prairies. They lived in the covered wagon until a small frame house could be built.
In 1884 Levi took a homestead in Brown County Nebraska, and they lived with their uncle Jerome Kimball, a veteran of the civil war and Fanny's brother, 18 miles northeast of Ainsworth Nebraska. Jerome Kimball lived in a double log house covered with sod. Levi and his sons drove up to Manville to the bridge to cross the Neobrara River. They soon had a house built in the canyon opposite my uncles home. The area of Brown County was later divided into two counties and the second part of Brown was called Keya Paha County. That fall Levi and Four of his eight sons cut logs and made a fine house 16 x 24 with a lathe and plaster interior that was one and a half stories high.
Levi also helped find the town of Springview Nebraska, he helped layout the town. Levi and his friend John Craig, A Scotchman, found a spring Coming from a sand dune hence the name Springview. They helped build a school down their canyon a mile but, just upon table land, it was named "Hard Scrabble." This was written by Levi Painters Daughter Minnie, Cynthia Minnie Painter."
