"Twenty-Third President
MANUEL GREGORIO AZEVEDO (1877-1965)
Born on February 12, 1877 at Portal Sao Jorge, Azores. Azevedo was the son of Joao and Isabel Azevedo of São Jorge. He immigrated to California in 1891 and went to Delano, Kern County, to join his aunt, Miss Bárbara Albert, with whom he lived for two years. There he attended school to learn the English language. From Delano he went to Marin County and thence to San Francisco, finishing his schooling at the Lincoln School at Fifth and Mission Streets. He spent eight years in that city and one year and four months in Oakland, where he learned the barber's trade. In 1903 he came to Antioch to start a shop for himself. He then built a popular and successful business in the First National Bank Building where he had his three-chair shop. In 1921 he became an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company with an office at his residence (505 Sixth Street) in Antioch. He continued to operate his shop until 1922, when he sold the business to his son, Henry, to solicit life insurance full time.
In 1953 he retired from his position with the water and park departments of the City of Antioch. Azevedo served on the City Council for four years and was also assistant chief of the Volunteer Fire Department of that community. He married Miss Emily Renas of Antioch on November 26, 1900 and from this marriage there were two children: Henry and Maria.
He joined U.P.E.C. Council No. 15, San Francisco, on September 9, 1900 and transferred to Council No. 51, Antioch, in 1905. He was elected Outside Guard in 1910 and was the first member to occupy all chairs in succession from Outside Guard through the Presidency (with the exception of Secretary or Treasurer). He was elected President in 1915 and presided over the U.P.E.C. Convention held in Santa Cruz in 1916. During this convention the host council served a banquet to a delegation of nearly 600 on the beach of Santa Cruz. In his term of office he initiated 1,190 new members and organized Councils 149-153. Assets of the
U.P.E.C. at the time amounted to $710,594.37 with a membership of 11,892. He also served on the Board of Directors in 1916 and 1919. He was a member of the Pittsburg Elks, The Order of Red Men, I.D.E.S., a charter member of the Antioch Fraternal Order of Eagles and a longtime member of the East Contra Costa County Chamber of Commerce (1926). He died on January 13, 1965 and
was buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Antioch, California."
