"EVELYN WELKE
Evelyn Welke, 88, died of natural causes on Thursday, Oct. 11. Memorial services will be held on Monday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life after the service at Evelyn's home at 8030 Crestwood Drive, Boise. Evelyn was born in Gilroy, Calif. on April 21, 1919 to Elsie and Ralph Ross. When she was big enough, she picked fruit in their orchards every summer to earn money. Evelyn grew up around tall, handsome Charles Julian Welke and soon a love match was made. After waiting for Evelyn to get her college degree at San Jose State and teach for one year, they finally set a wedding date. But Julian's draft number came up sooner than expected so they eloped to Carson City, Nev. and were married on Oct. 18, 1941. Their happy union took them to five western states, produced four children and spanned 51 years before Julian's death in 1992. They have made Boise their home since 1960. She was a frequent contributor to local newspapers where her wit and lively prose were always appreciated. Evelyn was a role model to her children for her enduring fairness, good humor, positive attitude and calm demeanor. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved to visit her, especially at the annual reunions at the family cabin in McCall. After she lost her beloved husband, she surprised the family (and herself) by finding a second love late in life. Gene Miller was a wonderful friend and partner for her these past 12 years. Survivors include her three daughters Julie (Paul) Hauger, Sue (Larry) Rourke, Martha (Flip) Howell and son Ross Welke (Jack Reynolds), nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Norman Ross.
