"The second witness, G. G. Galvert, testified that he had known said land since May 24, 1865; that it was occupied shortly after James L Randall, and afterward by said Jackson and Dias,
who used the same as a stock range and for farming"
"Witness [Duncan Gameron] further testified, that, after Randall, the land was occupied by Mannel Dias, untl settled upon by Mr Rees"
"Rees offered in evidence the affidavits, papers and original deed heretofore filed herein by said Bees on the14tb of February, 1887;"
"Another affiant, W. J. Field, swears that he has known said land since 1860, and at that time it was occnpied by James I. Randall down to the year 1866, when he sold the same to Frank Jackson and others; that from 1866 to 1880 the land was occupied and claimed by said Jackson and Mannel V. Dias as pre-emption claimants, who improved said land, and had the larger part under fence ; that said Dias had a dwelling house on said land, and resided thereon with his family from the latter part of 1865 to the year 1880, claiming said land as a pre-emptor, that since January 1881, said laud has been occupied by Thomas Rees and family as a home. The affidavit of Field is corroborated by the joint affidavit of Dias and Jackson, and also four others."

[Brother of our Manuel Dias? Manual living in Brooklyn in 1885.]
- [S00172] Notes.
Manuel V Dias and his wife Catherine Mathis are the root of the Dias family that immigrated from the Azores in 1854 and 1867 respectively. Their Azores parents are not known.
Logic: This Manuel V Dias, b 1836, is ours based on his obituary, mention in Catherine (Mathews) Dias' obituary, and agreement with the 1910 Census. And also mention of Mary (Dias) Renas aka Mrs. J T Renas, in both obituaries with her correct address. Debbie has a picture on wood labeled "Sante Anna" with "Manuel N Dias" on the back in pencil (probably Manuel V Dias). The the 1884 land patent in Redwood Canyon (now San Leandro Reservoir) is confirmed by of the Decisions of the Department of the Interior saying that Dias lived there from 1865 to 1880. Also Mary Dias born in Redwood Canyon in 1868, and the picture of the house in Redwood Canyon. And Manuel Valedan Dias' voter registrations in Brooklyn Township which contains the parcel.
It is nonetheless problematic that Manuel and Catherine do not appear in the 1900 Censuses even though Manuel appears in the Voter Registrations from 1868 onward. Perhaps the Census taker just never got out to Redwood Canyon that year, or perhaps were on the move to Berkeley or elsewhere.
Caution: There is a Manuel V dias in San Mateo 1880, b 1830 Fayal, Azores. Also Possible brother of same, Joseph V Dias. Neither are related.

Redwood Canyon is on Redwood Creek in Alameda County, and Redwood Road in the East Bay Hills. It is now filled with the San Leandro Reservoir.
Manual V Dias and neighbors Jackson, J J Dias, and Nunes farmed there, as shown on the 1878 Land Ownership map from Alameda County. Also Manuel Dias Mendonca.
It has been known as Brooklyn Township, Eden Township, ultimately part of Oakland.
