- [S00025] Gimbel Notes, email 4/12/2014 J D Culp.
"My great grandmother was Marian Gimbel, and my great aunt was Lillian Gimbel (known as aunt Mimi). We are the California relatives of the PA Gimbels,
Marian Gimbel married James Carrick- their daughter Lillian (Carrick) Culp was my grandmother. Lillian was married to Ted Veasey, they married later in life and had no children.
I am also in contact with my father's (David Culp) cousin John Gimbel of Medford, NJ. John's father was Harry Boyer Gimbel b. Oct. 26 1908, Harry was my great grandmother Lillian's brother. My dad remembers his grandmother (Marian Gimbel) talking about her grandfather having a Hotel in the bay area that burnt down prior to his moving back to PA to become a butcher. I am somewhat new to genealogy, my interest in which has been sparked by my wife Katie and I expecting twins in Sept."

- [S00025] Gimbel Notes, email 5/4/2014 J J Gimbel.
"Jeremiah: by copy I'm including my sisters Mary, Connie, Patty, their husbands and my wife Danielle. We were together yesterday and they helped supply some details. One thought I had was to contact the CA Gimbels and coordinate an update to the database. I would suggest NOT changing anything now, there are many mistakes and I can also supply additional details such as dates from grave markers.
Me: John Joseph Gimbel; My wife: Danielle Patricia (nee Sweeney) Gimbel; Our children are John Joseph Gimbel, Brian Joseph Gimbel, and Kyle Joseph Gimbel.
Our boys are all married and two have children. John and Donna (nee Phillips) Gimbel have a daughter Ava. Kyle has a daughter by previous marriage (nee Autumn Oliver) named Kayley Danielle Gimbel and son with Jacquelyn (nee Conroy) named Christian Ryan Gimbel. Brian is getting married May 10 to Tracy Fowler. John, Brian and Kyle were previously married.
My siblings are Mary Elizabeth Scott, Constance Marie Ingham (not shown), and Patricia Ann DesMaisons.
Mary's family with Donald Lawson Scott is missing: Donna Marie Durham, Mark James Scott and Diane Lee Duda. Donna has 3 children by prior marriage to Roy Lewin: Christina Lewin, Roy Lewin, and Scott Lewin. Christina is married to Nate Lanning and they have (2) children Nyla(f) and Sovin(m).
My Dad Harry Boyer Gimbel and Mom Elizabeth Mary (nee Garvin) seems correct but my mother's family is missing.
My Dad's parents seem correct but your Great Grandmother Marion's family is missing: her husband James P Carrick and their children your grandmother Lillian and her brother James. The picture of Marion's husband is actually the picture of their son James.
I do remember hearing that at least one sibling boy died as a child, by my recollection named Frank but I cannot recall for certain. I am also unsure of the John J Gimbel III name.
I remember visits from John and Cecelia Gimbel and their son Greg and talk about the daughter Helena. Greg worked for SS Pennock Wholesale Florists as did my Dad, I suspect Dad got him the job. We would see Greg once a year when my dad did his taxes.
I recognize other names but cannot supply detail: the Kogels and the Doyles.
As for John Justus Gimbel I can confirm the story of emigrating from Germany, settling in California (perhaps owning a store) and moving east to Philadelphia . He served in the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company G during the Civil War. He served in Washington DC and was promoted to Corporal and assigned to "duties with the colors" (he carried the flag and became a prime target). He was in the first battle of Fredericksburg VA December 13, 14, 15 1862 where he was wounded in the shoulder, breast, and right leg then captured by the southern forces (R E Lee or "Stonewall" Jackson) and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond VA. In January 1863 he was paroled in a prisoner exchange and then spent the remainder of the war "recovering from wounds' in Philadelphia. He went by the name Justice or Yustice including the name John.
Dad said he owned a butcher shop and died of blood poisoning resulting from accidentally putting a meat hook in his hand. My Dad spoke of him but never about his own father. His father deserted the family and your grandmother Marion and her sister had to go to him and ask for money for the family. She is reported to have detested having to humble herself. He apparently was a rather loose individual and died of syphilis at Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry, a section of North Philadelphia. He and Katherine are buried together in Philadelphia.
My sisters and I remember Katherine as my Grandmother who had a "wild" youth running away from home at age 14 and making her own way in life. She liked the Phillies, having a cold beer and playing parlor games with us kids, your Dad included. She lived with Lillian and Ted Veasey in her later years.
By the way, I never knew we had California relatives and was unaware of any of them visiting Philadelphia."
