"Charles Small Dies In South. Native of Butte County and Resident of Chico Passes Away in San Mateo. Charles E. Small, formerly widely known Chico resident, where for years he was connected with the local newspapers, died at his home at San Mateo Saturday night. His death was unexpected to his family and friends, it resulting from an abscess on the brain following an attack of influenza from which he had apparently recovered.
Small was a native of Butte county and was 53 years of age. He resided in Chico practically all of his life until a few years ago when he went to Palo Alto and later to San Mateo. He began life as a newspaper carrier, from which he advanced to an apprentice printer and from the composing room developed into a newspaper reporter. He was an efficient printer, and when machine composition displaced hand composition quickly became an expert linotype operator.
At one time he conducted the Chico Enterprise, leasing the plant from the late Watson Chalmers, conducing the paper for about a year. He then took a position with the Chico Record in 1897, and some years later took a position at Grass Valley. He returned to the Record in 1909, taking charge of the linotype department. He remained in that capacity for some years, rounding out fifteen years employment with the Record.
He removed to Palo Alto to give his two oldest children the advantage of a university education, taking employment there and in San Francisco.
Last year Small qualified and was appointed as teacher of linotyping and printing in the San Mateo High school and was accredited as a teacher by the state board of education as a teacher of industrial arts in secondary schools. He had full mechanical charge of the school’s publications and to perfect himself in his work attended the last summer session of the University of California at Berkeley.
Small was for many years actively identified with the National Guard of California and served as captain of Company A of Chico for one year. He was a member of Chico Parlor of Native Sons.
Funeral services were held yesterday in San Mateo where interment was made. Among Chico residents attending the funeral were Mrs. W.F. Locey, a sister, and her daughter, Mrs. Stella Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Tuck, F.H. Tuck and Mrs. Charles H. Camper.
Deceased leaves the widow, Mrs. Eva Small, née Tuck, of San Mateo, six children: Mrs. Irene Welke of Gilroy, Warren, June, Frank, James and Beatrice Small of San Mateo and three sisters, Mrs. W.F. Locey and Mrs. Herbert Avery of Chico, and Mrs. Edith Hudson of Los Angeles."
