"Josiah Hamilton Langdon Tuck
The subject of this brief mention was one of the first to reach the Pacific Coast, after the discovery of gold had been announced to the world. He crossed the Isthmus of Panama and arrived in San Francisco in January, 1849, and was at Auburn, in Placer County, in February of the same year. He was born in the State of New Hampshire in 1825. Was educated at Hanover and graduated as a geologist. Except one year engaged in the wool trade, he has been very actively engaged in developing and selling mines. Has made 49 trips across the continent in the interest of mining corporations and effected the sale of 39 different mines. He has erected 10 different quartz mills and is now, in company with his son Fred, operating Orofino gold quartz mine, on which he has the most complete mill in the county, fully equipped with the air cornpresser, power drills, eight batteries, seven concentrators, White's revolving furnace pans and settlers, together with a colllplete assaying and snlelting outfit, all located on a 40 foot ledge, on which there is a double compartment shaft and all run by water power, with 360 feet pressure.
Mr. Tuck was married in 1835 [sic probably 1853] to Lucy A. Cutler, a native of Vermont. To them have been born 8 children, 5 of whom are yet living. Frank H. is Supt. of mines. Mary E., now Mrs. Charles Miller, of Saint Charles, Ills., Clanon T., a boot and shoe manufacture in N. H., Fred B., Supt. of Orofino mines, and Kittie, now Mrs. Dr. G. H. Beach, of Los Angeles. In addition to his various mining interests he has one of the finest almond orchards in California, located near San Jose.
His father was Col. Edward Tuck, who commanded the Fourth Reginlent of New Hampshire troops in the war of 1812, and his mother was Mary Warren, a relative of General Warren, who fell in the battle of Bunker Hill."
[This is the only reference to Mary as "Warren", other records say Whittier so going with Whittier for a while!]

"Passing in Review
J.H.L. Tuck — For a number of years there lived in St. Charles a tall, rather distinguished looking gentleman, smooth and courteous in manner, with a pleasant smile and a genially winning way, whose business called him much of the time away from home. The Tuck house was on the Geneva road, the house a pleasant frame structure, standing on a slope just south of the residence of David Anderson. The house and grounds were neatly kept ad the barn was a favorite resort of the boys who were schoolmates of Fred Tuck, the youngest son. Fred was a jolly fellow, full of life and vim. He could throw a snowball so swiftly that it would sting wickedly, although he never made one much bigger than a good-sized marble. Frank, his older brother, possessed a remarkably jolly disposition and was a favorite with all who knew him. Kittie, the younger daughter, was a lively little romp, who in after years as a visitor in St. Charles renewed the friendships she had formed in her childhood. She was an accomplished musician. Her sister May, always a bright, happy girl, became the wife of C.A. Miller and lived until recent years surrounded by a host of friends. The Tuck family at length removed from the pace, but its members have at intervals visited the old time. Their former home was burned about 1868, taking fire from a pile of ashes which had been dumped against the woodshed. It was at the time occupied by Seth McClenathan and family. All the members of the Tuck household will be pleasantly remembered by those who knew them in the days of their residence here."
